I’d work until I could barely keep my eyes open and crash at 11 p.m. only to wake up the next morning and do it all over again.

• I was jealous of my colleagues, who had free time to party and relax

• I felt like I was juggling so many balls that, at any moment, one would fall and then I would lose control of them all.

• I felt proud of my accomplishments but I was moving too fast and I was too tired to enjoy them.

• I was constantly stressed, which also meant I was always catching colds and coughs, which made the days seem even longer.

After moving to Entertainment Tonight in Los Angeles, my schedule got, if anything, more intense. After deep consideration, I decided to enter real estate to have more control over my life. I thought I was making a lifestyle switch, but I still thought I had to do it all, and I had no staff. It was almost more intense, and at times, I felt like I couldn’t breathe.

• I was waking up with a “to do” list that never seemed to shorten.
• I spent my “free time” on the computer searching for online properties for my clients.
• I was constantly on-call: no matter what time of day it was, weekday or weekend, if my clients needed me, I was expected to re-arrange my schedule and show up.

• I often spent the entire day showing properties to different clients around the city, taking, on some days, up to 12 buses and countless cabs because I was legally blind and had no reliable or quick way to get around.

And the list goes on.

I was afraid.

I remember sitting at my desk on Saturday night, overcome with stress. I felt pulled in so many directions. There was too much to do and not enough time, but I didn’t want to disappoint anyone: myself or my clients. I must have been on the computer for about two hours that night working and thinking until I was completely exhausted.

I practically fell into bed and proceeded to hug my pillow and cry myself to sleep. All night I tossed and turned, my mind consumed with stress and worry. When I woke up the next morning, I was emotionally and physically drained, but I knew one thing for sure:

I wanted to work to live and not live to work.

But that’s not what was happening. So, something needed to change. I woke up the next morning and felt déjà vu. I’d been here before in life and had survived, so I could survive again. I was so far out of my comfort zone that it was easier to imagine just continuing down this path and breaking through to the next stage in my life than turning around to retreat.

One thought pervaded my mind that morning: an assistant could solve all my problems.

But an assistant could also make me go broke.

The rest of the day was spent weighing the pros and cons.

• I had rejected hiring help previously because I thought I couldn’t afford it.
• I didn’t want to sacrifice my lifestyle and have to accommodate another schedule in my life.
